How to Conquer Fear of Mistakes in Your Bullet Journal

Everyone makes mistakes, they are an absolutely unavoidable part of your life no matter who you are or what you do. Now, bullet journals are known and loved for their organisational prowess and, mostly, their aesthetic potential. Bullet journals are basically like art these days, especially if you hop onto Instagram or Pinterest, seriously, it’s crazy how much effort goes into these guys. When you’re putting together your own journal or adding yet another creative page to your masterpiece, you can feel the weight of these artistic expectations putting pressure on you and that leads to major frustration when something doesn’t go as you expected or just plain wrong. Take a deep breath! First, your journal doesn’t have to be perfect and chances are this mistake is hardly noticeable. Second, there are ways to fix these things…

Practical Fixes…

There are a few crafty tricks to correct an error in your bullet journal! These include…

White-Out Pen

White-out pen works wonders for small mistakes here and there. Having this one hand is kind of like a stationery lifeline and might make you feel more relaxed whilst you’re busy bullet journaling. When applied carefully, you legitimately can’t tell it’s there!

Craft Tape or White Tape

Tape is amazing for repairing mistakes that err on the bigger side! If your bullet journal is gridded or ruled in some way, it’s best to opt for a colourful craft, or washi, tape. You can find tape in the most amazing patterns, colours and even in fun finishes like glitter, so your mistakes could actually add to the overall aesthetic of your journal in the long run. For those without any gridding or lining, white tape will do the trick perfectly. This is a great alternative to white-out pen as it leaves an entirely even, flat surface – great for mistakes in statement headers or page numbers.

Pictures, Stickers or Textiles

Why not embrace the scrapbook look when you find yourself face to face with a pretty big mistake? Taping or gluing down pieces of tactile textile, sentimental photos or just the odd sticker here and there looks amazingly cute and conceals any accidents flawlessly.

Repurpose the Page

If a mistake is kind of too big for you to cover up, you can always just repurpose the page as a doodling ground, a rough to-do list or a block colour leaf in your journal.

Stick Two Pages Together

Really hate the idea of an error in your book? Stick two pages together with strong glue or double-sided tape to keep it completely secret and concealed!

Remove the Page

If you want all evidence of your mistake gone forever, you can always hold your breath and rip out the page entirely. This does risk the rest of your journal and is pretty extreme, so should only be done if your error is truly awful or unfixable.

Alternately…

Ask yourself why your mistake is bugging you so much! By understanding what’s really bothering you, you might have a different perspective when it comes to dealing with it.

Embrace the Mistake

Look, sometimes it’s a flaw that makes something beautiful, and that goes for bullet journals too! Learning to deal with, and embrace, mistakes is a very important life lesson that we should be comfortable practising even with the most precise and exact areas of our life. Slow down and look at your stress levels or need for perfection, this could be the problem and not that wonky letter or misspelled word.

Bullet journaling is all about organising your life, connecting with yourself and giving your creativity an outlet, it’s all about positivity and fun – so don’t let it get you down!
